Divas This Winter

Posted by admin on 24th November 2004

Divas this winter

THE WINTER just got a whole lot hotter. Sony Music has brought together the latest hits of Britney Spears and Destiny’s Child this season.

Fans and foes alike have been intent on figuring out whether Britney is an angel or a devil-in-disguise. The truth is just that she’s not all that innocent, indeed. A better explanation can be found in the words she snarls in her brand new single and video — Bobby Brown’s 1988 hit “My Prerogative”: “Everybody’s talking all this stuff about me/ Why don’t they just let me live?”

Apart from Britney, the world’s best-selling female pop vocal group, Destiny’s Child, is back with Destiny Fulfilled, also in the CD. Beyonce, Kelly and Michelle have used the lessons learnt during their own solo excursions to create a unified and powerful album. In it, they truly breathe new fire into the worlds of contemporary pop and R&B music.

Boy In A Man’s World

Boy in a man’s world

The new boy on the block, Shahid Kapur talks about his ambitions and passions

Shahid Kapur… well placed for the journey ahead — Pic. by Anu Pushkarna

SHAHID KAPUR is back to school! Shooting for his film Milenge Milenge at Pathways School near Gurgaon, Shahid feels nostalgic about his school days. “Till fourth standard I studied in Delhi at Gyan Bharti School. Its building was very similar to this,” recalls Shahid. “I was a naughty student who used to indulge in all the wrong activities. One day I ran away from school with my friend and my mother kept looking for me.” But he doesn’t give an impression of being mischievous. “Perhaps that saved me from punishment all the time.” His favourite subject – “Extracurricular activities.”

No doubt, a couple of films old, the actor has indeed given heart to an industry looking for somebody to fill the boy space, some men are refusing to vacate but in his vocation too he is deriving more mileage because of his friendship with Kareena Kapoor. “True, the media asks me more questions about our friendship than work. We are honest about our relationship but the media should not be too intrusive.” Some call it deliberate? “If that were true, Fida would have been a major hit.” That means their on-screen chemistry is not working. “You can’t judge from one film. Shah Rukh’s first film with Madhuri, Anjaam was a flop but later they gave hits.”

With parents, Pankaj Kapur and Neelima Azim being actors, Shahid denies he has ambitions to be a star. “My parents did tell me about good cinema and not to take acting frivolously. I am not here for money but because of a passion for art. Dancing has been my passion since childhood. I was part of the Shiamak Davar group.”

Similar to Shah Rukh

On comparisons with Shah Rukh, in terms of energy and diction, Shahid maintains, “It is heartening to be compared with the great actor but for the time being I do not want to put any burden on my shoulders. I am just 23. I do not have any strategy nor am I looking for an image. Maybe 8-10 films later I would think about all this.”

However, one who doesn’t like to be seen everywhere Shahid quips, “After a day’s work, I want to have dinner with my family. I don’t want to remain under the lights round the clock.”

For the time being, Shahid is sticking to romantic roles with Dil Maange More, “a comedy with Soha Ali Khan”, and Milenge Milenge “a tale of childhood romance with Kareena where destiny plays an important role.” “I am doing another light film Life Ho To Aisi with Amrita Rao and have recently started shooting for a film with John Mathew Mathan.”

Ask Shahid, what he loves the most about Kareena and he asks for five pages to express his sentiments.

Editing himself, he says, “I love her frankness. She tells you what she feels about you.” However, misgivings are much easier to point out. “She works so hard, she has no time for me.” Poor boy!

Fun Guy

Fun guy

ANU PUSHKARNA

HE’S very much the fun guy that he often plays on the big screen. Actor SHAHID KAPOOR maybe a prankster in most of the films that he acts in, but in reality takes his work rather seriously. “Acting is serious business for me,” said he.

Kapoor said he did not mind the long schedules and erratic work patterns since he loves what he is doing. He also refuses to define good cinema as one that is off beat. “Ultimately a good film is a film that people can identify with and want to see. For me, it’s a job and a job is all about doing it well.”
