Siti Nordiana – Terima Wang Hantaran RM17,000

Posted by admin on 30th November 2005

Oleh NOR FADZILAH BAHARUDIN

TERSENYUM MANIS…

SELAMAT BERTUNANG!

Rock – Cetusan Pengalaman Mamat Khalid

Posted by admin on 29th November 2005

Oleh ABD. AZIZ ITAR

“Bagaimanapun kumpulan saya berpecah apabila setiap anggota membawa haluan masing-masing.

From The Ramp To Playback Singing

Posted by admin on 28th November 2005

From the ramp to playback singing

K. Satyamurty

Saru Maini dreams of making it big in the Bollywood music scene

DESTINATION BOLLYWOOD: Saru Maini

BANGALORE:

“I want Bangaloreans to be proud of me,” says this versatile singer. Especially because she is trying to make it big in Bollywood as a playback singer. Few from this city have tried that so far.

For now, Saru Maini has other things going well for her. Her new album “Ishq Hua” and its music videos are being shown on television. Perhaps the first to be shot in Morocco.

She remembers the “Halki Neend Hai” number that was filmed at a sleepy Moroccan market place. “It was mid-afternoon and everyone was literally slumbering… till they heard the song. By the time we packed up, they were all humming it though they did not know a word of Hindi,” she says.

A law graduate, music has been her passion since college days. “Yes, I did model on the ramp, but my heart was always in singing and I am just about reaching my dream,” says Saru.

The album is not just Indipop but has enough serious undertones to make it different. The song in the video is, she explains, a fusion of Punjabi and Hindi with Sufi influences. A slow and sentimental song which is also later presented in a faster, more pop beat in the album. Saru is shown as a princess facing separation from her husband on their wedding night. The prince goes to war, leaving behind a heart-broken princess, but later it is a happy reunion. The second video is the one on Morocco with some African beats to the music.

What she feels most satisfied about are her stage shows, which have become increasingly popular. There were 40,000 people at her shows in Jaipur and Pune. She sings from a wide repertoire of evergreen hits and remixes and a popular number is that of Asha Bhonsle’s “Aa Jaane Jaa…” What makes a stage show a hit? “You need a stage presence which is partly looks and partly costume. You have to enact a song, not just sing it and you need to gauge the mood of the audience. The crowd may be in a mood to listen to slow sentimental numbers or in a mood to dance to a faster beat. If you can judge that right, your show is a hit,” says Saru.

She looks up the icons of the music world such as Asha Bhonsle and Sonu Nigam and among those overseas, Jennifer Lopez and Shania Twain are her favourites. But she is also very particular about developing her own style and image and using her own unique skills to the most. “If you believe in something and work hard with determination and courage, you will succeed and I am determined to succeed,” says Saru, who is now noticed in Mumbai for the Reva electric car she drives with a custom-made “leopard spots” body. It stands out and so does the singer.
